In Exercise 2 we examine a simple script that has some errors in it, and we use PythonWin debugging tools to identify and fix them. Open up the PythonWin if its not open already. Make sure that the debugging toolbar is visible. Create a new script , copy the code below into it, and save the script as Exercise5.

For example, strings are shown in one color beige , numbers in another teal , and Python commands or other reserved words in a bold blue. Next, see if you can decipher what this script does. It has four variables name , gender , age , and class , each assigned an initial value.

Then, the script issues two print statements to print the values of these variables to the interactive window. Check the script for syntax errors. Just to the right of the Run icon in the toolbar is the “Check” tool. Click this to see whether you script has any syntax errors. If a syntax error is present, PythonWin places the cursor to where it thinks the error occurs.

Set the first line to be a comment. The first line in our script is not Python. It is just some text we include to identify what the script does, and so we want Python to just ignore it. To do so, place a pound sign in front of it. Check the syntax again.

You’ll now see that there’s a syntax error in Line 6. The problem here is that we have used a reserved word “class” as a variable name. We know this because “class” is in bold blue. You should have no more syntax errors as shown by the following message at the bottom of the PythonWin application window:.

Run your script. Go ahead and try running your script using the Run button with no debugging. You will get an error message in the interactive window. In this case, the error message states the error occurs in line 8. Some error messages are not as kind and don’t reveal exactly where the error occurs. For this we need debugging tools. Step through your script. In the debugging toolbar are three tools that allow you to step through your script a line at a time.

Check variable values during run time. The window will mention the location of the script file. Now, since the above code accepts input from the user, it will first ask for the user to Enter first number. Enter an input number and select OK. The script file will open. PythonWin is known for its debugging features which help in writing a code efficiently. Debugging refers to the process of finding and removing errors and bugs from a code. PythonWin has several debugging tools which help in identifying and resolving errors.

Debugging shall execute our code line by line for any error. PythonWin has a check option that will find any syntax errors if present in the code. At the bottom of the window, it will list the syntax error along with the line in which it occurred. In case of multiple errors, it will show one error at a time, line by line. After typing the missing parenthesis, the error will be resolved.

At the bottom, it will show the message that it was successfully able to check the file. Now, we will see the debugging tools available in PythonWin. Support Python in !
